Does Stress Cause Acne?

There can be acne problems in men and women due to stress as stress can increase the level of adrenal glands which can lead to more acne.
Link is found between the stress and adult acne in a research. There is an increase in the stress hormones when body is stressed which can cause disturbance in equilibrium and different changes experienced like increase in blood pressure, weight gain and acne worsened. There is confusion that whether acne is caused by the stress or it is worsened only. There can be increase in the oil in your skin secrets with stress due to which pores are clogged and cause breakouts. You can find the link between acne and stress by examining the stress level when acne breakouts occur. There can be acne on certain parts like right side of chin or left cheek which can be due to some environmental factors like cell phone is resting on the side when you are talking.

There are some medical studies made to find the link between the stress and acne. Similar study was made at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2002 in which 22 acne suffering students were involved. The acne was worsened in the students with exam stress. The flare up of the acne was also found in these students with worsening of diet during this stressful period.
There can be worsening of acne in two ways. The adrenal glands are stimulated for more hormones production and healing process is also slowed down. Nonrepinephrine and epinephrine is secreted by the adrenal glands due to stress and male hormones are secreted by adrenal cortex. These hormones can stimulate the sebaceous glands due to which more sebum is secreted which can result in acne formation. The wound healing capacity can be decreased with the psychological stress. There can be effect of stress on overall skin condition. There can be more oil production in the sebaceous glands due to overproduction of cortisol which can make skin extra oily. Stress can be defined as physical as well as emotional being and undue physical strain is also included in it when we talk about acne.
There can be many examples of emotional stress like bullying, overwhelming overload, relationship problems, and anxiety about upcoming event. Lack of sleep, sedentary lifestyle, over demanding sports and smoking are some examples of physical stress. There are clogged spores found in many people having acne and they can not see it. There can be inflammatory response to the body as well with stress and there can be breakouts of walls with stress. There can be redness around broken pores and there is influx of pores. There can be overdrive of the adrenal glands with stress. Stress can increase the male hormones androgens. There can be more acne with higher level of androgens. There is more acne in women due to larger production of androgens in adrenal glands.
